Why Basketball Shapes the Best Athletes

Let’s face it, basketball is a fast paced sports.  There are 10 players on the court at a time going up and down the full length of the court.  The only times they get to rest are free throws, time-outs and in between quarters.  During the 40 minutes or how ever long the game is, you are constantly running, jumping, shifting, backpedaling and moving your arms; its non-stop action.

Let’s compare the game of basketball to some popular American team sports:

Basketball vs. Baseball:  Baseball is a lazy man’s sport.  There is very little action other than when you’re batting, on base, pitching or a ball is hit to you.  Most of the game is spent in the field looking busy or on the bench.  Granted, being athletically fit will help you in certain situations but being athletic in basketball is much more necessary.

Basketball vs. Football: American’s love the fall because we see and play football.  If you’ve seen or played, you probably noticed that there is alot of stoppage time.  To be a great running back, wire receiver, lineback or safety requires athletic ability.  They may have similar abilities as basketball players but football players always get breaks and don’t have the lung capacity as basketball players do.

Basketball vs. Hockey: In order to succeed in hockey, you have to be brutal.  You are either the punisher or you need to dodge the punishers.  Hockey is a tough sport but the better players are more skilled than athletic.
